Interests around here are vast. Here's the virtual version of the Ultimate Guide to Northwest Kansas . Genealogy research is a common hobby for our guests. Hunting is also an option, and every year the area hosts the Governor's Pheasant Hunt. It's always quite the event for hunters, so make your plans early! Here's the hunting information from the State of Kansas.

Groups and tours are welcome at the Fick Fossil & History Museum. The Museum Store offers gift items such as rocks, minerals, fossils, books, and jewelry. Children, strollers, and cameras are welcome. The museum appreciates advance notice for groups of 15 or more.

Oakley, the county seat of Logan County began as a way-station on the Union Pacific Railroad line built between Denver and Kansas City in the 1860s. William Cody and William Comstock competed in a buffalo shooting contest in 1868 near Oakley. Cody won, earning the name "Buffalo Bill."

Although dry here in recent years, eons ago the Smoky Hill River had enough flow to carve unique "badlands" in the fossil-rich chalk layers of western Kansas. One of the best-known formations is the area known as the Monument Rocks, sometimes referred to as the Chalk Pyramids, and officially recognized by the National Park Service as a National Natural Landmark. Visit Keystone Gallery to top off your tour. According to guest comments, Keystone Gallery is a "must see" while camping in the area.

Although Oakley is in Logan County, High Plains Camping sits inside Thomas County. The community of Colby, with the Prairie Museum of Art & History and its huge Cooper Barn offer a wonderful day trip for you. The county seat is less than 20 minutes from High Plains Camping.
