Reedville Fishermen's Museum - Dedicated to preserving the heritage of the lower Chesapeake Bay's maritime history, the Reedville Fishermen's Museum celebrates sailors, fishermen, and vessels that ply the sea. You can see the three ships in their permanent collection, including the Claud W. Somers skipjack and deck boat Elva C., both of which are entered in the National Register of Historic Places. The museum hosts a number of educational events and activities and supports clubs like the RFM Quilters and RFM Photo Club (you can see their works of art at the museum). Join them for one of their boat talks, the Women's Boat Building Workshop, the annual Blessing of the Fleet, the May Golf Tournament, or the February Benefit Gala. Caledon State Park - Bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts will love viewing the bald eagles of this National Natural Landmark. This park, situated on the Potomac River in Virginia's King George County, is the summer home of one of the largest groupings of bald eagles on the East Coast. Birders have counted as many as sixty of these stunning birds perched on the bluffs that overlook the river. For a special summertime eagle tour, call the park in advance (the eagle trails are off-limits for some parts of the year, except to guided tour groups). Visitors can also enjoy hiking through the forest, occasional hunting, picnicking, and viewing the displays at the Visitor's Center. Of course, this is a great spot for bird watching! Colonial Beach - This charming seaside town on the Potomac River is a delightful place to visit. Known for its annual events like the Potomac River Festival, Bluegrass on the Potomac, Annual Rod Run to the Beach, Boardwalk Arts & Crafts Festival, and two rockfish tournaments, this is a great place to explore. With a number of antique shops, historic sites, and stunning water views, you can enjoy a relaxing day in Colonial Beach, one of the gems of the Northern Neck area. Visitors can arrive by car or boat (marina slips are available), and if you'd rather not drive around town, you can always just drive a golf cart! Head to Colonial Beach for outstanding gift shops, restaurants, and the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay. Fredericksburg Battlefield - The Northern Neck area of Virginia is known as the bloodiest place in America, thanks to the vast number of soldiers who died here during the Civil War. More than 15,000 men died -- many buried in unmarked graves -- and 85,000 men were wounded. You can re-imagine this intense battle scene when you visit the Fredericksburg Battlefield, an area that's now under the protection of the National Park Service. Learn more about the battle itself, the way soldiers on each side were treated, and the civil strife that such upheaval created in this rural part of Virginia. You can also tour the Chancellorsville, Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Battlefields.
